Kangana Ranaut set to play a Kabaddi player in an upcoming Bollywood movie

Kabaddi in the recent past has become one of most anticipated and followed sport worldwide. Kabaddi was earlier considered a rural sport and hence was not followed by the urban audience.

But of-lately, the scenario has changed and we have seen fans from all spheres of life supporting the game with their heart and soul. The glamour and fanfare that was missing on the Kabaddi field for many years now needs to be controlled and restricted.

But after the Pro Kabaddi League 2014, this changed. Players started to get the attention. They started to get better facilities, attention from the government. Kabaddi became popular in the country. Now PKL is the second most watched league after the Indian Premier League. Bollywood has also started giving attention to Kabaddi. Actor Abhishek Bachchan owned a PKL franchise Jaipur Pink Panthers in 2014 inaugural season of PKL.

Now, Bollywood director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari to make a film on Kabaddi. ‘Panga’ will star actress Kangana Ranaut as a Kabaddi player. The film will follow the life of a national-level Kabaddi player. Punjabi singer-actor Jassie Gill will be in the role of Kangana’s husband and Neena Gupta will play a special role.

“A Bollywood movie on the sport will definitely add more value and help in elevating it. Movies like ‘Dangal’, ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’ and ‘Soorma’ have received immense appreciation. Today’s youth now know about Mikha Singh because they watched the movie. Similarly, a movie on kabaddi will educate people more about the game”, said Anup Kumar, former captain of the Indian Kabaddi Team in conversation with Business Standards.

Monu Goyat who became the most expensive Kabaddi player by whopping Rs 1.51 Crores. He became the highest-paid non-cricket sportsman in Kabaddi.  When asked about a film on Kabaddi Monu gave his opinion. “If a movie is being made on the sport, it will definitely help the sport grow”.

Rishank Devadiga said, “A Bollywood movie on kabaddi will make the sport famous on a global platform and will help elevate its stature. Movies made on Cricket stars like Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar have garnered so much popularity and the same will happen to kabaddi.”

Panga movie is expected to release in 2019.
